BCCI Contract Shakeup: Iyer's Return Confirmed, Big Names Retained

Shreyas Iyer's Triumphant Comeback

Following a stellar performance in India's Champions Trophy victory, Shreyas Iyer is poised to reclaim his BCCI contract. The Times of India reports that the official announcement, encompassing the full list of retained players for the 2024-25 season, is expected this week.

Iyer's 243 runs, at a robust average of 48.60, cemented his place as India's leading run-scorer in the tournament. His two fifties and consistent performance have made him an indispensable part of the ODI squad.

Key Meeting to Decide Contractual Fates

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia is scheduled to meet with Head Coach Gautam Gambhir and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar in Guwahati on March 29th. This meeting will finalize the central contracts, setting the stage for the coming season.

Interestingly, Guwahati will also host the IPL clash between the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings on March 30th, just a day after these crucial discussions.

Ishan Kishan's Contract in Question

While Iyer's return seems assured, Ishan Kishan's future remains uncertain. Both players were excluded from the 2023-24 central contracts for missing domestic matches, defying instructions from the BCCI. Although Kishan has played the domestic season this year and started his IPL campaign with a stunning century, his contract renewal is still under discussion.

A source told TOI, "Shreyas is set to regain his contract, and it will be in a top category. However, discussions are still ongoing on whether in Ishan's case."

Big Guns Retained in A+ Category

Despite retiring from T20Is, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to retain their prestigious A+ contracts. Jasprit Bumrah will also remain in this elite category.

A BCCI source confirmed to TOI, "all three will be retained in the highest category, along with Jasprit Bumrah."

Sharma is set to lead India in a challenging five-Test tour of England this summer, solidifying his crucial role in the team.

Axar Patel's Rise and New Contract Entrants

Axar Patel, a vital cog in India's white-ball teams, is anticipated to be promoted from Grade B to Grade A. His role as vice-captain of the T20I team and significant contributions to India's recent ICC title wins have earned him this recognition.

Meanwhile, Varun Chakravarthy, instrumental in India's Champions Trophy win, is on track to secure his first BCCI contract. Nitish Kumar Reddy, fresh off a Test century in Australia, and Abhishek Sharma, who dazzled with a blistering 135 against England, are also set to receive contracts.

Ashwin's Departure

With his retirement from international cricket last December, spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin's name will naturally be removed from the BCCI contract list.
