Kolkata's IPL Opener: A Calm Rahane Backs His Explosive Middle-Order Despite Defeat

A Measured Response to Setback

Despite a heavy opening loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane exuded calm confidence. He firmly stood behind his explosive middle-order, even after they failed to fire against a resurgent RCB.

Rahane acknowledged areas for improvement, stating, “This is our first game of the season... There’re always areas we can improve as a team, as an individual.”

Unwavering Faith in Firepower

KKR’s middle-order stumbled against a game-changing spell from Krunal Pandya, restricting them to a below-par score. However, Rahane remained unfazed. He highlighted their past performances, emphasizing their experience and dangerous potential.

“Because guys who got out in the middle overs, they actually did well for us… So, I’m going to back them,” Rahane asserted, highlighting his long-term vision for the team.

He further championed their aggressive style: "It's always about giving them that freedom and allowing them to go out there and play their game.”

Tactical Decisions and Team Combinations

The decision to send Rinku Singh lower down the order raised some eyebrows. Rahane explained the strategic thinking behind opting for Impact sub Angkrish Raghuvanshi, emphasizing the situational advantages Angkrish offered at that stage of the game.

He reassured fans that Rinku's promotion up the order is definitely on the cards, stating, "We will see him bat up the order.”

Addressing Bowling Concerns and Hazlewood's Return

KKR's pace attack, weakened by Anrich Nortje's injury, appeared vulnerable. Rahane, however, downplayed any concerns, emphasizing the team's depth and the need to find the right combination. "We don't need to panic... They are trying hard. They are working hard," he reassured.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood, returning after an injury layoff, shone brightly for RCB. His economical spell of 2/22 played a crucial role in their victory. Hazlewood expressed his delight at feeling refreshed, both mentally and physically.

"I think this is probably the freshest I’ve been in a long time," Hazlewood declared, radiating positivity about his return to form.
